Annual Award for Curatorial Excellence

The Award for Curatorial Excellence was inaugurated in 1998 to honor a curator who has made lasting contributions to the discipline. The award is made annually in May.

  • 1999: Marcia Tucker (Founder of the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York)
  • 2000: Kasper König (Städel School of Art, Frankfurt, Germany)
  • 2001: Paul Schimmel (Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles)
  • 2002: Susanne Ghez (Renaissance Society, Chicago)
  • 2003: Kynaston McShine (Museum of Modern Art, New York)
  • 2004: Walter Hopps (Founding Director of the Menil Collection, Houston)
  • 2005: Kathy Halbreich (Director of the Walker Art Center) and Mari Carmen Ramírez (Wortham Curator of Latin American Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston)
  • 2006: Lynne Cooke (Curator at the Dia Art Foundation) and Vasif Kortun (Director of the Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center in Istanbul)
  • 2007: Alanna Heiss (Founder and Executive Director of P.S 1 Contemporary Art Center)
