The Greenroom: Reconsidering the Documentary and Contemporary Art

Saturday, September 27, 2008 - Sunday, February 1, 2009
The Greenroom: Reconsidering the Documentary and Contemporary Art is the inaugural event of a long-term research project on ”the documentary”. The research project aims at investigating the heritage of documentary practices in contemporary art, in relation to the history of film, documentary photography and television as well as to video art. It also aims at situating these contemporary documentary practices within current cultural production and exploring their role within mainstream media and activism. The research project is a collaboration between CCS Bard and the artist and theoretician Hito Steyerl. The research project will run for approximately three years, having started in March 2008. The Greenroom: Reconsidering the Documentary and Contemporary Art is on view from September 27, 2008 through February 1, 2009. Download exhibition guide [pdf]    [more]

Bernd Krauss: I am Yours

Tuesday, September 2, 2008 - Friday, December 19, 2008
I am Yours is a new project by Bernd Krauss, the fall 2008 artist-in-residence at the Center for Curatorial Studies. The centerpiece of the project is a quaint wooden shed situated on the grounds of the Center on the Bard College campus. Built by the Amish and purchased locally in nearby Germantown, this type of shed is conventionally used to store gardening tools. In the context of Krauss' residency, however, the shed will be transformed into a studio, a curatorial space, and has the potential to gain other new and unexpected functions.    [more]

Conversation: The Yes Men

Tuesday, December 9, 2008
Conversation: "Barthesian Filmicity and the Nugatory Dilemma" with The Yes Men. The Yes Men are currently making a film that follows them on several of their recent adventures, and in the process asks (and answers) some essential questions about the biggest problems now facing the world. The Yes Men use culture-jamming and identity correction to insert themselves in situations where they can expose, satirize or otherwise irritate negative corporate and political interests. Andy Bichlbaum, a founding member of the group, will speak about recent projects and show clips from their upcoming film.    [more]

Curatorial Scrutiny: "Mediation" with Eungie Joo

Tuesday, December 16, 2008
CURATORIAL SCRUTINY takes a close look at the working process of a curator, identifying different components of the curatorial process. Traditionally the question of mediation is added on to a curatorial project and more often than mediation in that sense is taken care of by the educational departments. Funding furthermore tends to be geared towrds educational aspect of curatorial projects. What are the pros and cons of this set up? Since the early 90s, many art works themselves thematise comunication and exchange. What does this mean for "education" within the framework of art institutions? What is the difference betwen "education" and "mediation"? Curator Eungie Joo, director of the educational department at the New Museum, will speak in relation to her own practice. Sofia Hernandez Chong Cuy will respond. View Full Schedule    [more]
